THE POLICE SCAM
Elderly individuals have reported receiving calls from someone posing as a member of the Akron Policy Department. The caller claimed to be investigating fraud at local banks and asked the victim to assist in a “covert” operation. The victim was asked to withdraw large sums of money from their account either accompanied by the caller or to meet the caller after the withdrawal.
This is a scam. The APD will never request a citizen to withdraw personal funds.
PLEASE CONTACT AKRON POLICE IF YOU RECEIVE SUCH A CALL.
THE GRANDPARENT SCAM
A grandparent receives a call from a “grandchild” claiming to be out of state and are in a bad situation, such as having been in an accident or being mugged. The caller then asks for money to be wired ASAP and not to tell their parents. Sometimes another person will make the call, claiming to be an arresting police officer, a lawyer or a doctor. This is an old scam that is currently resurfacing.
This is a scam. Resist the pressure to act and try to contact another family member to verify the information.
PLEASE CONTACT YOUR LOCAL POLICE IF YOU RECEIVE SUCH A CALL.
